Storms and fires and rabbits with big pointy teeth!
"The only two things in life that scare me are God and the IRS" - Dr. Dre
Greetings my faithful followers. I trust your week was good. The picture is a bit of clickbait. My metrics tell me that you guys like flashy pictures. Don’t get me wrong, this storm has the potential to be nasty, but that it most likely east of us. Hopefully. For my midwestern and eastern readers, pay attention on Friday / Saturday.
Spring has arrived in the Ozarks. It’s officially shorts season around here. It was 85 yesterday. Temps are solidly in the upper 70s and lower 80s all week. And guess what else it is. Brushfire season.
For some strange ass reason it’s normal around here for random property owners to just light their property on fire and like walk away. Seriously. Now….believe it or not, when the conditions are what the meteorologists call “dry as fuck”, and the wind is blowing….. now’s not the time to just press the easy button and go home for Frito pie. That one was about 3 miles from our place, and…it’s still smoldering. I’m sure the 50 MPH winds forecast for Friday night won’t do anything bad with that.
I guess some asshole has been running around the county and lighting off random piles of whatever and has been running the local crews ragged like a Benny Hill episode. Yes, Ozark county has it’s very own firebug running around out there. Prolly not a good idea though. FAFO, know what I mean. This is Sparta Missouri. Southern Missouri. You get shot for that here - and the cops will be JUST FINE with it.
For those of you who want to know how to do it right…. it looks like this.
Notice how the large debris and ladder fuel has been removed to prevent this from taking off? How about the presence of multiple persons with tools. I also stopped burning operations when the conditions became unfavorable for it.
In our case we were finishing up some fuels reduction and prepping areas for planting grass seed. As some of you know we want livestock in the next couple of years, and they like to eat every day. And grass is cheap. And it don’t grow where oak leaves have choked out the soil. Does that make sense or do you need some scratch paper?
One day El Rancho, will actually be a Rancho. Just like Bonanza, only with sheep. We already have a FarmDog©
Apparently its “our chair”
What else is going on? Well… its spring break right now. The Boy is off working for the week on a project down at the local marina with his buddy. The Girl is dong her thing, and The Young Man is doing some Lego thing right now in between outside chores.
So, for an update on Project AdventureDog.
The remote device went online this afternoon. It is located in a strategic location on the property (high ground) and is all enclosed in a custom 3D printed weatherproof-ish enclosure. I did some range testing this afternoon along with FarmDog© when we walked the entire property line. There are now no dead spots on the property, and I likely have coverage for about a mile in all directions. We can also now text each other on the entire property and surrounding areas whether or not the cell network can see us. Now I run an endurance test, which means that I let it run till it dies. Or, I get bored and need to look at the internals. We’ll see.
Hopefully I will have some more pictures soon. Like I said last week we have begun to work in the garden beds prepping for the upcoming season. Planting should happen soon.
Until next time, don’t let The Man get you down. Here are your memes.
