Bakery stuff, Pickles, and Flamethrowers
"You know it's cold outside.......when you go outside and it's cold" - Kamala Harris
Good evening y’all (see, all southern and shit).
I trust you all have plans for the upcoming Labor Day weekend. Barbecues, drinks, and sunburns are traditional….but I understand that some of my “more seasoned” readers may prefer a glass of wine and a firepit in the evening. Whatever floats your boat I guess… I’m not judging.
There are no flamethrowers, I just said that to get you to click on this. They call it “click bait”. I’m getting all “Influencer” and shit. Remember - you knew me when.
Its still hot here, and likely will be for the next month or so until the cool off happens. I mean it’s hot, but at least its humid - am I right? Some of the very first leaves have begun to change. I think its the heat wilting trees, the locals are convinced that the winter is like totally right around the corner. I guess when you are used to shorts for like 9 months out of the year and your garden has been in since the beginning of April, You are ready for a change. I know we are.
The garden is still producing prolifically - at least the Tomatoes. Here’s this mornings’ harvest.
Yes, I go outside in the morning and water my garden & pick stuff before I commute the 75 feet to my office. Sometimes I even wear pants. It’ hard living, I tell ya. Haven’t been stuck in traffic in months.
It’s the better part of a gallon. I throw them into a bag and chuck ‘em into the freezer. As per usual once I get up to 5 gallon bags I will can them up, just like last time. We won’t have enough for the year, but it’s a good start - especially for the first year in the garden. The strawbale gardens really do work. And the best part is that as the material breaks down and the bale becomes unusable in that form it turns into a part of the raised beds we are building up. Give it a few years and we may very well be growing most of our own food. I plan to start the irrigation infrastructure this winter.
I’m still required to tell you that if you buy something from out amazon links we get a cut of the vig, but it wont cost you anything more. Come on…… all the cool kids are doin it.
We also made pickles out of some of the cukes from the garden this weekend. Fermented old fashioned dill types, none of that “bread and butter” bull-crap. Honestly I never understood the point of taking perfectly good cucumbers and making them taste like that.
We started baking our own bread this week. We will see how this goes - different recipes and such to find something that works for day to day use. The cost per loaf will go WAY down - to like a dollar or two per loaf from the current price, and….you actually know what’s in it. The list of ingredients is like four. You can do it too, just get the instructions. Once you know the basics, its easy to learn more.
As usual, we went out tonight for swimming and food on the fire. The water up by the mill is relatively cool and still moving, so its a refreshing after a long day of heat. Everyone had a good time and FarmDog© got to swim. She really seems to be taking a liking to it in the last week. Way more than before - I think its time to get her into a PFD, as I can see her getting in over her head. We’ll see.
This pic is from Monday evening when the boys wanted to jump off the cliffs at the lake. I think it’s pretty.
That’s about all I got for you all this week. Keep your head on a swivel, avoid the fatal funnels, and don’t let the man get you down.
Until next time, here is your meme propaganda brought to you by the philosopher Johnny Rotten
